Pinney's Beach, Nevis

Four Seasons Resort Nevis

The setting is one of the best in the Caribbean: a long calm beach, a volcano behind it and monkeys on the golf course. The hotel hasn't kept up with it. The rooms are tired, meals are slow and drinks are $30, so go for the island and the staff, in summer, when the rates are kind.

Service

The staff are the first thing I'd tell you about. They learn your name early, they're lovely with children on the beach and at the pool, and they move at an easy island pace that suits the place. If anyone in your family has allergies, the kitchen takes real care.

That easy pace has a flip side. Food and drinks can be slow to arrive, and at the pool or on the beach there isn't always someone around when you want something. If you're going in a busy week, go in knowing lunch may take a while.

Rooms

The rooms are big, and that counts for a lot with a family. Even the entry-level ones are close to 500 square feet, with a marble bathroom, a soaking tub and a balcony or terrace. You choose between a view of the sea and a view of Nevis Peak, and I'd take the sea.

The rooms are the weak spot right now. The resort opened in 1991 and the rooms were last redone in 2018. They feel a little dated and tired around the edges, and they don't have the polish of the newer Four Seasons resorts.

For families I'd look hard at the villas, which come with kitchens and often a private pool. In the main resort, the upper-floor Poinciana suites have the better outlook, and the ground-floor Indigo suites let small children run straight out onto the grass.

Food and drink

Mango is my pick. It's open to the breeze, right on the water, with Caribbean cooking and live music, and it's where I'd book for the first night. Breakfast at EsQuilina is lovely too, and the same room turns Mediterranean for dinner.

There's also On the Dune on the beach for seafood and lobster, sushi at Kastawey Beach Bar, and a rum bar called the Crowned Monkey, which I'd visit for the name alone.

My grumbles are the price and the pace. Drinks are around $30 each, and meals can be slow. The good news is that Charlestown is five minutes away and the island has some great little beach bars, so you don't have to eat in every night. I'd plan on not doing so.

Setting

This is why you come. The resort sits on Pinney's Beach, a long, calm sweep of sand, with the green cone of Nevis Peak rising right behind it and St Kitts across the water. There are three pools, including a quiet adults-only one, and the low cottages are spread over a lot of ground, so it rarely feels busy.

The golf course climbs the lower slopes of the volcano, and green vervet monkeys wander across the fairways as if they own them. You arrive by boat from St Kitts, straight onto the resort's own pier, and for me that's the moment the holiday starts.

The gym and the golf pro shop were lost in a fire in late 2023, so I'd ask what the gym arrangement is before you go. In August 2026 the villa owners' association sued the resort's owner, alleging poor upkeep. The owner says the claims are without merit, and the hotel is open as normal.

Value

This is the hardest one to call. In summer the rates are some of the gentlest you'll see at a Four Seasons, starting around $500 to $600 a night. In winter it's more like $1,500. Then come the extras: the boat transfer is normally $200 a person for the round trip, and the bar bill grows quickly.

If you expect all that, I think you'll go home happy. If you don't, the bill will be the first thing you remember.

Booking through an advisor helps here. Breakfast for two and a resort credit usually come with the same rate, and the hotel often adds a fourth night free.

Who it suits

It's for families first, then golfers, tennis players and couples who want a quiet, easy-going week on a properly calm island. If sharp modern rooms matter to you, I'd look at the Park Hyatt across the water on St Kitts. And if you'd rather have character than a big resort, think about one of the old plantation inns up in the hills, or split the week between the two.

Booking

You can get Four Seasons Preferred Partner perks, usually free breakfast, a hotel credit and a room upgrade, by emailing a travel advisor. There's tons of them out there but I like using this portal, as it shows live prices and I don't have to wait for a quote.
